Hi, there. Looking for a job? The Learning Center for the Deaf, in Framingham, Mass, is in need of a high school science and/or math teacher.

The school is a small (210 students, PIP to 12th grade), state-run, private school. The pay is competitive and the benefits are great. ASL fluency is a must.

Interested? Contact Judi Broderick at (508)879-5110 or send your resume to her via email at judi_broderick@tlcdeaf.org or mail at 858 Central St., Framingham, Ma, 01701. If you have any questions, you can respond to this post and I will be happy to answer them.

Thank you!

I graduated BU several years ago. I worked full time at a public school with a Deaf program and attended BU in the evenings. I was able to handle it, and I know TLC is fairly flexible with making sure you get to classes on time and whatnot. Several others have done this as well. One benefit would be that, when the time comes, you get paid for your student teaching.

The certification would be in whatever you get from BU. Where you work has no bearing on what you do at BU. However, taking a few Deaf ed classes would help. Once you get your math certification (or really, once you pass the Mass teacher test) you can apply for Deaf Ed as a secondary certification with a letter from your supervisor documenting that you have been working with Deaf students.

The position is both chemistry and math.

I'm not much help with the math, but you would be mentored by one of our wonderful math supervisors, and create lessons with them.

As for the chemistry, I am the one in charge. Of the 2 chem classes that we need a teacher for at this time, one is team taught with me, and one is during my prep (so I would probably be in the classroom most of the time to help out). The classes are both low/normal level (meaning low reading levels but normal cognitive levels), and the curriculum is half a year spread out into a full year, so it is very slow moving. For chem, everything is already prepared. If you were to apply for the job, you would not have to create lessons, activities, labs, or anything...all you would need is to sit with me once or twice a week to go over the info and labs.

Ok, now that I have probably scared you away with the fact that we need a chemistry teacher, let me know if you have any questions.

No, you haven't scared me off at all actually. I'll admit that I prefer math and am stronger in that subject, but if the science curriculum and lessons are all laid out for me, I shouldn't have a problem at all.

I guess I should call Judy and see where things go from there.

Thanks for all of of the information and answering my questions.

Hi, there. Judy told me you have an interview on Monday. Yay! I will be there for part of it, so we will get to meet in person. :-) I saw your resume...very nice. I saw you worked with Alice for a while...isn't she great? She used to work here...ran yearbook, which I took over from her. By the way, I think I may have found a way to reduce the chem to 1 class (the one team taught with me), but I am not sure...I have a tech class that meets at the same time as one of the chem classes you would have had, but tech is more math based than anything, so I think if we switch the tech and chem it will be easier on you...besides it only meets twice a week. Again, I have everything prepped for that. We shall see. Good luck on Monday!
